Apart from the legal definition provided by the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act, simply stated a caregiver is someone who assists a patient obtain marijuana. The caregiver can purchase the cannabis off the streets or cultivate it themselves. It is the goal of Michigan Medical Marijuana Association to connect patients to caregivers that cultivate medical-grade cannabis. We believe patients shouldn't have to risk back alleys to get the medication they need.
Like patients, caregivers must also conform to the strict guidelines outlined in the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act, as well as Department of Community Health, Bureau of Health Professionals administrative rules. Additionally, a caregiver should be certified by the MMMA. We will soon be providing caregiver training course to make sure caregivers understand the needs of their patients and how to conduct their business ethicly.
Patients
will choose a caregiver because they don't know where to buy cannabis
or because they don't have the time, space or knowledge to grow their
own cannabis. While cannabis is just a weed, it takes a skilled
technician to consistantly grow medical grade marijuana. Outfitting a
grow room alone could run a couple thousand dollars or more and
requires daily maintenance. Optimal growth also requires precise
conditions. For example air temperture, humidity and CO2 content must
all be controlled with mechanical equipment. You have to be able to
engineer your room's electrical and heating, cooling and ventilation
systems to provide the atmosphere your plants need to grow and to
prevent mold and rot problems to your grow space! Hydroponic grow
systems must also be engineered to fit your room and require constant
attention. Growing in dirt is easier but then there's all that dirt to
get rid of. And if all that's not enough there's the problem of getting
seed or clones to start your grow operation.
Look
for a caregiver that's a skilled cannabis technician who provides the
type of cannabis that's best for your needs. Most caregivers will
deliver directly to you (within a limited distance) while others prefer
that you come to them. Caregivers should provide an uninterrupted
supply of medical grade marijuana to their patients. It should be
packaged in a ziplock baggie with a label that contains the price, the
weight of the contents, the name of the strain, the name of the grower,
the date it was harvested and a medicinal use only warning. A caregiver
should never try to pressure their patients to buy more cannabis than
they need and the patient should never ask for more than they are
allowed to have. A patient should always pay for cannabis when they get
it. Honesty and reliability are the foundation of a successful
patient/caregiver relationship. Remember, as the patient you have the
right to choose your own caregiver. If your present caregiver is not
meeting your needs, we are here to help you!
If you would like to be a subscriber caregiver and a member of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association community, please be patient. We will have further information about becoming a caregiver, caregiver training, and information about many other caregiver topics in the coming weeks. We will also be establishing a caregiver registry after the new year. Please refer back to this page after January 7, 2009, for updated information.
